Over a weekend you can tick off the main highlights of the Moravian Karst: the Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně) with its underground boat trip, the Macocha Abyss — free to view from both lookout platforms — and one further cave of your choosing, whether that’s Kateřinská Cave (great for families), Balcarka Cave (the finest decorations) or Výpustek Cave (military history). Base yourself in Blansko or Sloup, and you can manage both days without a car, using the train and bus route 232.

If you don’t have time for the full week in the Karst, two days are enough to cover the essentials — the most iconic cave, the abyss, and one extra experience off the beaten track.

Day 1: Punkva Caves and the Macocha Abyss

Head straight for the Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně) first thing in the morning — during the high season (April–October), book your tickets in advance, as tours can sell out by around midday. The tour, including the boat trip along the River Punkva, lasts an hour.

In the afternoon, take the cable car or walk up to the Macocha Abyss — entry to both viewing platforms is free year-round. You can round off the day with a walk through the Pustý žleb gorge back towards Skalní Mlýn, where you started.

Day 2: a second cave of your choosing

On your second day, pick a cave based on what appeals to you most:

Save the afternoon for the journey home, or for a short stroll around your base.

Swapping the days around

If you’re staying closer to Sloup than to Blansko, it makes sense to swap the order — the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves and the Pustý žleb gorge (heading down towards Skalní Mlýn) on the first day, then the Punkva Caves and the Macocha Abyss on the second. This saves you unnecessary back-and-forth travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I fit in more than two caves over a weekend? Technically yes, but with the queues at the Punkva Caves and the travel time between sites, it’s more realistic to plan on one main cave and one additional cave per day.

Do I need a car? No — both main sites (Skalní Mlýn and Sloup) are reachable by train to Blansko and bus route 232, though having a car will give you more flexibility.

What’s the best combination for families with children? The Punkva Caves (children love the boat trip) on day one, followed by Kateřinská Cave on day two — both are easy going in terms of walking.

Can this all be done in a single day? It’s possible, but realistically only the Punkva Caves plus the Macocha Abyss, without a second cave — there usually isn’t time for more once you factor in queues and travel between sites.
