Restaurants near the caves are few and far between, and in season they tend to fill up. The safest bet near the Punkva Caves (Punkevní jeskyně) is the restaurant at Hotel Skalní Mlýn, open every day from morning until evening. Up at the Macocha Abyss, the historic Chata Macocha offers tiled stoves and a terrace. In Sloup you can eat at the hotels Broušek and Stará škola, and in Holštejn at Martin Hájek’s home-style restaurant with its smokehouse. By the Olšovec pond in Jedovnice you’ll find the Surfbar, in Křtiny the castle restaurant, and in Bukovinka the Rakovec inn with a lunchtime menu. The karst’s speciality is the trout from Skalní Mlýn, which carries the Moravian Karst regional product label. Opening hours change with the season, so do check before you set off.

The Moravian Karst is a place for outings, not a gourmet destination. Most people come for the caves and only start thinking about where to eat once they’re hungry. On summer weekends, even the restaurants tend to be packed around midday. Here is a rundown of places that have their own website or verifiable opening times, arranged by where you’re heading.
The Heart of the Karst: Skalní Mlýn and Macocha
The restaurant at Hotel Skalní Mlýn is a short walk from the Punkva Caves and the cable car. You can have breakfast here even if you’re not staying at the hotel.
| Mon–Thu | 7:00–21:00 |
| Fri | 7:00–21:30 |
| Sat | 7:30–21:30 |
| Sun and public holidays | 7:30–21:00 |
The kitchen closes an hour earlier. The terrace is open in summer. Contact: tel. 516 418 113, skalnimlyn.cz. For more on the whole complex, see our article Skalní Mlýn.
Chata Macocha has stood by the Upper Bridge above the abyss since 1895. In 1996 it was rebuilt in the style of a Swiss mountain chalet. It has a restaurant with tiled stoves and an outdoor terrace, plus shops selling souvenirs and minerals. The website doesn’t give opening hours, so it’s best to phone ahead: tel. 516 444 250, chatamacocha.cz. For more on the abyss, see our article Macocha Abyss.
Ostrov u Macochy, near the Balcarka Cave (Balcarka): the Staré časy inn is a family-run place serving home cooking, with food available to take away. According to OpenStreetMap it is open Mon–Thu 11–17, Fri–Sat 11–20 and Sun 11–18. Its website wasn’t working when we checked, so do phone before you go: tel. 516 412 321.
The Northern Karst: Sloup and Holštejn
There is no restaurant right at the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně). The centre of Sloup is a few minutes’ walk away.
- Hotel Broušek (Sloup 248) cooks with local ingredients, offers a daily menu and a lunchtime menu, and has a garden terrace with a children’s corner. Tel. 516 435 307, hotelbrousek.cz.
- Hotel Stará škola (Sloup 30) serves traditional Czech, Czech and international cuisine, Moravian dishes and a daily menu. Website: staraskola.cz.
- Martin Hájek’s home-style restaurant in Holštejn (Holštejn 50) grills and smokes, and offers fresh fish and grilled cheeses. It is small and open only on certain days. From June to August it is open Tue–Thu and Sun 12–19, Fri–Sat 12–20. Outside the summer it opens only on Wednesdays and Fridays, 17–19:30. Tel. 725 442 997.

Jedovnice and the Olšovec Pond
- Surfbar (Riviéra 524) by the Olšovec pond serves modern cooking from fresh ingredients, with homemade desserts and speciality coffee. In summer (June to September) it keeps longer hours; out of season it is open mainly at weekends. Tel. 778 028 974, surfbar.cz.
- Kemp Olšovec (Olšovec campsite) has its own catering for campsite guests; you’ll find the price list at olsovec.cz.
This year’s Olšovec fish harvest takes place on 7–8 November, and it usually comes with fish sales and refreshments; see Pond Harvests 2026. For more on the town, see our article Jedovnice.

Blansko has the widest choice of restaurants and cafés in the area around the karst. On the edge of town is Statek Samsara (Samsara Farm), with a café serving speciality coffee, Moravian wines and light snacks, tel. 727 945 560. See Blansko.
Trout from Skalní Mlýn
If the Moravian Karst has a local speciality, it is trout. Hotel Skalní Mlýn rears rainbow trout and brook trout in spring water from the Punkva, and the fish carry the Moravian Karst – regional product label. You can try them in the hotel restaurant. Live or vacuum-packed prepared fish can be bought at the fish shop about 1.5 km before the hotel on the road from Blansko. The fish shop is open only on Fridays, 9–17, but all year round.
Practical Tips
- In summer and at weekends it’s usually packed around midday at Skalní Mlýn and at Macocha. Eat earlier, or wait until after your tour.
- Bring a snack. There is nothing in the gorges or on the paths between the caves, and the choice near the Balcarka or the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves is limited. Take your rubbish home with you – you’re in a protected landscape area.
- Out of season, smaller places are open only on certain days. Phone ahead.
- Without a car, the easiest option is to eat in Blansko, from where buses run to the karst; see The Moravian Karst Without a Car.
