In one day from Brno (or as a stop on a longer trip) you can fit in the Punkva Caves with the boat ride, the Macocha Abyss for free and lunch at Skalní Mlýn — and, if you start early in the morning, the Kateřinská Cave on top. The key is simple: book the Punkva Caves in advance; the Czech Cave Administration explicitly recommends this in its price list. The plan also works by train and bus.

If you only have one day in the Moravian Karst, don’t try to see everything. This plan sticks to one hub (Skalní Mlýn) and two main stops: the Punkva Caves and the Macocha Abyss.
A model plan for one day
Model plan. The times are approximate. Your booking sets the entry time to the Punkva Caves: pick a free slot when buying tickets and shift the other items to match. The plan does not promise any specific connection of the tourist train, the cable car or buses.
8:50 — arrival and parking at Skalní Mlýn. The car park is paid and open daily all year. A car costs 200 CZK according to skalnimlyn.cz; the Cave Administration lists 150 CZK off-season and 200 CZK in season. Allow a buffer for parking, getting your bearings and walking to the tourist train. Our suggested buffer is 15 minutes; that is an estimate, not a figure from a source.
9:10 — the tourist train to the cave entrance. The tourist train takes about 10 minutes from Skalní Mlýn to the Punkva Caves and always leaves 20 minutes before the cave entry time, so for a 9:30 tour it leaves at 9:10. On foot it is 1.6–1.7 km on level ground.
9:30 — Punkva Caves. The guided tour takes about 50 minutes, the route is 1,250 m long and ends with a boat ride on the underground Punkva. Buy tickets in advance.
Around 10:30 — the cable car to Macocha. The lower station is a short way from the cave entrance, the upper one near the upper viewing bridge. The ride takes about 2 minutes. The sources do not give waiting time at boarding, so add it yourself. You can also walk up: 1.7 km with a 130 m climb. In winter the cable car runs a reduced service; check with the operator before you go.
Around 10:45 — the Macocha Abyss. Walk out onto both viewing bridges, the Upper and the Lower. The view differs from each, and both are free of charge, no booking needed, all year round.
Around 11:30 — back to Skalní Mlýn. By cable car down and the tourist train, or on foot (see the return).
12:00 — lunch at Skalní Mlýn (see Where to eat).
13:00 — a second cave or a walk. If you still have time and energy, visit the Kateřinská Cave (about 40 minutes, 580 m route) or walk the first kilometre of the Pustý žleb valley.
15:00 — departure.
Transfers: mode and duration
The times given are pure ride or tour time. The sources do not give waiting time at boarding or possible queues, so add them yourself.
- Skalní Mlýn → Punkva Caves: tourist train about 10 minutes (route about 2 km), or on foot 1.6–1.7 km on level ground.
- Punkva Caves: guided tour about 50 minutes.
- Punkva Caves → Macocha: cable car, ride about 2 minutes, or on foot 1.7 km with a 130 m climb.
- Back: see below.
Getting back to your car or the bus stop
- Cable car down, then the tourist train. The cable car takes you from the upper bridge back to the Punkva Caves (about 2 minutes), and from there the tourist train runs to Skalní Mlýn (about 10 minutes). The tourist train runs at regular intervals matched to cave entry times; check return departures on site, as the source does not give them. Return tickets: tourist train 150 CZK, cable car 160 CZK.
- On foot. From Macocha to the Punkva Caves it is 1.7 km with a 130 m descent, and from there to Skalní Mlýn 1.6 km on level ground. About 3.3 km in total (the sum of both sections).
- For the bus. The stop near Skalní Mlýn is called Blansko, Skalní mlýn. The bus back leaves on weekdays at 14:21 and 15:35, at weekends at 15:13 (see without a car). Check the departure in advance.
- In winter the cable car runs a reduced service, and the Cave Administration recommends parking at Skalní Mlýn.
Can you do it without a car?
Yes, but check the connections. We give a timetable only for the bus to Skalní Mlýn.
- Train to Blansko. The nearest railway station is Blansko. Find connections from Brno in the IDS JMK journey planner. Check the specific connection for your chosen day.
- Bus from Blansko to Skalní Mlýn. The stop is called Blansko, Skalní mlýn, line 226 serves it, and the ride from Blansko bus station takes 10 minutes. According to the IDS JMK timetable valid from 1 September 2026 (checked on 25 October 2026): on weekdays from Blansko at 7:40 (arriving at Skalní Mlýn at 7:50), 14:05 and 15:20, back from Skalní Mlýn at 8:08, 14:21 and 15:35. At weekends and on public holidays from 29 September from Blansko at 7:40 and 14:45, back at 8:08 and 15:13. Timetable (PDF). Check the specific departure before you travel.
- From the stop you continue by tourist train or walk 1.6 km on level ground.
Without a car, travel time to and from takes away from the programme, and the plan follows the bus: arrive at 7:50, return from Skalní Mlýn at 14:21 or 15:35 (15:13 at weekends). It is better to skip the second cave and concentrate on the Punkva Caves and Macocha.
Plan B
- The Punkva Caves are sold out. Try the Kateřinská Cave (about 40 minutes, 580 m route) or Balcarka (about 60 minutes, 720 m route, near Ostrov u Macochy; check how to get there). Information and booking for the Punkva Caves and the Kateřinská Cave is handled by ÚIS Skalní mlýn, tel. +420 516 410 024, info@caves.cz. Tour durations are from the Cave Administration’s 2026 price list.
- In high water the boat ride may be cancelled and the route shortened, with a lower admission price. Details are in the Punkva Caves guide; check the current situation with the Cave Administration before you go.
- Bad weather. The Punkva Caves are 7–8 °C, so bring warmer clothing. Macocha and its viewing bridges are outdoors (free, all year round); in the rain you can skip them or wait for a break in the weather.
What it costs: 1 adult in season
- Punkva Caves, full admission April–October: 450 CZK
- Train return: 150 CZK
- Cable car return: 160 CZK
- Total without a car: 760 CZK.

Frequently asked questions
Can I also fit in the Sloup-Šošůvka Caves or Balcarka in one day? Technically yes, but it means travelling between locations (Sloup, Ostrov u Macochy) and the programme becomes much longer. For one day we recommend sticking to Skalní Mlýn.
What if the Punkva Caves are sold out? See Plan B. Macocha stays free and needs no booking.
Is a day trip worth it, or is it better to stay longer? One day is enough for a “taster” of the main attractions. If you want to see more than two caves and walk the Pustý žleb or Josefovské údolí valleys too, plan for a weekend or up to a full week — see our complete seven-day itinerary.
