There are four lookout towers in the Moravian Karst and right beside it, and each one is completely different. Podvrší near Veselice is the tallest at 49 m, with a covered platform at 32 m and views across the whole karst. Alexandrova Tower above Adamov, built in 1887, is the oldest lookout tower in South Moravia, made of stone and free to enter all year round. U Lidušky Tower above Bílovice, built in 2021, is a metal structure almost 30 m tall with 131 steps, and it is free too. Burianova Tower on Milenka hill near Kunštát, built in 1928, is part of the Blaník Knights Cave complex, and entry costs 30 Kč (approx. €1.20 — a rough guide only, as exchange rates fluctuate). You reach Alexandrovka and Liduška on foot through the forest.

The karst is a land of gorges and chasms, so the best views are usually found up on the plateau. A lookout tower makes a good destination for a day when you don’t fancy going underground, or for the end of a walk when you want to see where you’ve been tramping all day. I’ve listed them from north to south.
Podvrší near Veselice: the tallest
Since 2001, the tower has stood on Podvrší hill above Veselice, not far from Sloup and Vavřinec. It is 49 metres tall, and the covered viewing platform sits at 32 metres. To reach it, you climb 168 steel steps up a spiral staircase wound around a telecommunications mast. On a clear day you can see the entire Moravian Karst and the Drahanská vrchovina (Drahany Highlands).
- When: seasonal. Next to the tower is a tourist information centre, open at weekends in June, daily from 10 am to 6 pm in July and August, and at weekends from 10 am to 5 pm in September and October.
- Admission is in the region of a few dozen crowns. Check the current price on tel. 724 177 023 or at info@rozhledna-veselice.cz.
- Inside the information centre you’ll find the Moravian Karst Beekeeping Museum and the fairytale office of Krasík the snail.

Alexandrova Tower: the oldest
This stone tower on the Nad Střelčím ridge above Adamov opened on 4 September 1887. It was built by the Austrian Tourist Club to a design by Oscar Mratschek and named after Alexander Suchánek, who championed the project. It is the oldest lookout tower in South Moravia. It lies within the cadastral area of Babice nad Svitavou but belongs to the town of Adamov.
It was damaged in the war and repaired in the 1960s, when a television transmitter was installed inside. In 2008–2009 it underwent a reconstruction costing roughly 5 million crowns, and the tower was raised. Today it stands around 17 metres tall, though sources vary between 16 and 18 m. It reopened in May 2009.
- Entry is free, and the tower is open all year round.
- The view looks mainly south: Brno and, in good visibility, the Pálava hills. On an exceptionally clear day, so they say, even the Alps.
- Getting there: from Adamov by a steeper waymarked path, or from Babice nad Svitavou by a gentler forest track that you can manage even with a pushchair.
- At night the tower is lit up, though because of the rules of the protected landscape area (CHKO) only outside summer time.
For more about the area, see the article Adamov.
U Lidušky Tower: the newest
Above Bílovice nad Svitavou, a metal tower with timber elements has stood since November 2021, rising almost 30 metres. 131 steps lead to the top. The structure cost 5.7 million crowns, half of it covered by a grant. It stands by Liduška’s Path (Liduščina cesta) in the Bílovice woods, where in 1919 the writer Rudolf Těsnohlídek and his friends found an abandoned little girl named Liduška.
- Entry is free.
- Beneath the tower there is a seating area and a bike stand. There are deliberately no bins, so take whatever you bring back out with you.
- Steps with a legacy: if you like, you can “rent” a step for 50 years and have a plaque with your name on it.
- Getting there: from Bílovice along Liduška’s Path, or from Ochoz u Brna through the Říčka valley on the yellow waymarked trail.
You can read the story of Liduška and Bystrouška the vixen in the article Bílovice and the Těsnohlídek Valley, and find the route from Ochoz in the article The Říčka Valley and the Pekárna Cave.
Burianova Tower: with knights below ground
On Milenka hill above Rudka near Kunštát, at an altitude of 579 m, stands a stone lookout tower dating from 1928. It was commissioned by the Kunštát butcher and businessman František Burian, the very man who brought the sculptor Stanislav Rolínek to Rudka. It is 18 metres tall. According to the operator, in good visibility you can see the Jeseníky, the Krkonoše and the Pálava hills from the top.
- Admission to the tower alone: 30 Kč, family ticket 100 Kč, children under 5 free. Payment is in cash.
- Opening times match those of the Blaník Knights Cave complex: from May to September Tuesday to Sunday, only on certain days in spring and autumn, and closed in December, January and February.
- Combine it with the Blaník Knights Cave, Masaryk’s Boots and the Sensory Garden in the same complex.
