Click on a point to see basic info and a link to our detailed guide. The Karst is small: from its northern end near Sloup to the southern end at Křtiny is roughly 13 km as the crow flies. Most sites cluster around Skalní Mlýn, from where both Punkva Cave and Kateřinská Cave, as well as the Macocha Abyss, are close by.

North: Sloup and Pustý žleb
- Sloup-Šošůvka Caves (Sloupsko-šošůvské jeskyně), including the Nagel Abyss. Short route 250 Kč (approx. €10 — this is a rough guide only, exchange rates fluctuate), long route 350 Kč.
- Kůlna Cave, an archaeological site right next door, tour 150 Kč.
- Sloup, a small market town with a pilgrimage church. In our view, the best base for a whole week here.
- Pustý žleb, an 8 km gorge running from Sloup down to Skalní Mlýn.
- Balcarka Cave near Ostrov u Macochy, the cave with the richest dripstone decoration.
Centre: Skalní Mlýn, Punkva Cave and the Macocha Abyss
This is where most of what draws people to the Karst is found.
- Skalní Mlýn: car park, miniature train, information centre with ticket booking, and a hotel.
- Punkva Cave (Punkevní jeskyně): a tour with a boat trip along the Punkva river, 1.6 km from Skalní Mlýn.
- Kateřinská Cave: home to the vast Main Dome, just a short walk from Skalní Mlýn.
- Macocha Abyss (Propast Macocha): both the Upper and Lower Bridges are free to visit, with a cable car running up from Punkva Cave.
- Vilémovice and Vavřinec: the villages the Macocha Abyss and Punkva gorge belong to.
- Podvrší Lookout Tower above Veselice, 49 metres tall.
South: Rudice, Jedovnice and Křtiny
A quieter part of the Karst that sees far fewer visitors.
- Rudice Sink (Rudické propadání): the spot where the Jedovnický stream vanishes underground. Free to visit.
- Rudice, with its windmill and Rudice geodes.
- Jedovnice: the Olšovec pond and swimming.
- Křtiny: Santini’s pilgrimage church.
- Výpustek Cave: a cave with a Cold War military shelter, from 160 Kč, wheelchair accessible.
- Býčí skála and the Josefov Valley and Křtiny Valley.

Driving into Pustý and Suchý žleb gorges is prohibited. If you don’t have a car, take the train to Blansko and then bus no. 226 to Skalní Mlýn or bus no. 232 to the Macocha Abyss and Balcarka Cave — see The Moravian Karst without a car.
FAQ
How big is the Moravian Karst? The protected landscape area covers 96.8 km². From Sloup in the north to Křtiny in the south is roughly 13 km as the crow flies.
Where’s the best place to start? At Skalní Mlýn. From there it’s a short hop to both Punkva Cave and Kateřinská Cave, plus a cable car up to the Macocha Abyss.
Can I see all the caves in one day? No — realistically just two. You’ll find a one-day plan in our article The Moravian Karst in a day, and a full week’s itinerary in our 7-day itinerary. For a weekend there’s a 2-day itinerary, and for travelling with young children a 3-day plan.
