Kotvrdovice (population around 920) sits on a plateau between Jedovnice and Senetářov, above the Moravian Karst. Its most interesting building is the Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, with a blue heart by the sculptor Jan Koblasa on its façade and a painting by Mikuláš Medek above the altar. The chapel is part of the so-called Jedovnice trilogy of modern sacred art. At the village feast, the local youth dance in restored Kotvrdovice folk costumes. Close to the village is the Tři sudy sports airfield, where you can arrange a scenic flight. The Kotvrdovice Past and Present educational trail runs through the village.

Kotvrdovice is next door to Senetářov, where I was born. The plateau between the two is open and windswept, and people here have always lived more from the fields than from the forest. The village is first mentioned in writing in 1349, though settlement is probably older.

What to see

Chapel of the Sacred Heart of Jesus

The chapel was consecrated in 1942. Its present look, however, comes from the artists who worked for the Jedovnice parish in the 1960s and 1970s. The façade is decorated with a sculpture of a blue heart by Jan Koblasa, and above the altar hangs the painting Sacred Heart by Mikuláš Medek. Together with the church in Jedovnice and the Church of St Joseph in Senetářov, it forms the Jedovnice trilogy, in which modern art and the Church met in the communist era.

Kotvrdovice folk costumes

The village has acquired 12 pairs of restored local costumes. Their design was based on local chronicles, the recollections of older residents and the advice of folklore experts. Every year the local youth wear them at the village feast to perform traditional dances. You can read more about feasts in the region in the article Traditions and Customs of the Moravian Karst.

Tři sudy airfield

A sports airfield with an active flying club. It hosts fly-ins and air days with aerobatics and scenic flights. You can also arrange a scenic flight outside these events. For news and updates, see the website lkkotv.cz.

Orlovna

The amateur theatre company here has a stage with a revolving set, which is a rarity for village theatre.
