Krasová (just under 500 inhabitants) sits on a plateau between Jedovnice and Ostrov u Macochy, well away from the main roads. It was founded in 1717 by Count Karel Ludvík of Rogendorf, who named it Rogendorf after his family. It only received its Czech name in 1946, and every year the village marks the occasion with the Traditional Krasová Fair (Tradiční krasovské hody) on the first Sunday in August. You’ll find a wide village green with lime trees and little ponds, a wooden chapel of St Clement of Ohrid, and, at the far end of the village, an angling area with two reservoirs. From there, the red-marked trail leads through the Krasová Valley to the Balcarka Cave. For an overnight stay, you can book a yurt on a working farm with animals.

Krasová is a textbook example of how villages were laid out “by the ruler” in the 18th century. Two rows of houses line the road, with a broad green between them. That layout has survived to this day.

What to see

The village green, little changed since its founding

The western row of houses was known as the Velká strana (“Big Side”), where the farmers originally lived. Opposite stands the Malá strana (“Small Side”), home to labourers without land. The green is dotted with spreading lime trees and two small ponds; there were once six along the main axis of the village. In 1834, Rogendorf had just 35 houses and 219 inhabitants.

During the Second World War, the villagers had to leave Krasová, as did those of the neighbouring villages that lay within a military firing range. You can read the story of the evacuation and return in nearby Senetářov in the article The Church of St Joseph in Senetářov. A year after the war, the village was given its new name, inspired by its setting in the karst.

The Výletiště (festival ground)

Krasová has no village hall, so everything of note takes place at the Výletiště, the village’s open-air festival ground. It hosts dances, the annual fair and the Christmas tree lighting. Events are mostly organised by the local volunteer fire brigade, which was founded here as far back as 1902.

Chapel of St Clement of Ohrid

This wooden chapel was built by the Kejnovský couple in their own garden. It serves pilgrims, and hosts, among other things, the fair-day Mass in August.

The angling area

At the end of the village, beside the red-marked trail, there are two retention reservoirs with an anglers’ hut. The site is looked after by local anglers. Since 2018 it has also had a commemorative plaque and a lime tree planted to mark the 100th anniversary of the Czechoslovak Republic.

The same count founded another village in 1724, naming it Molenburk after the second part of his title. Unlike Rogendorf, it has kept that name to this day. It is now part of the municipality of Vysočany, north of Holštejn.

Walks and rides

The Traditional Krasová Fair takes place on the first Sunday in August, in memory of the village’s renaming. For more on local fairs across the region, see Traditions and Customs of the Moravian Karst.

Where to stay

The village pub, U Krba, beside the sports ground, is currently being offered for lease, so check before you set off that it is open. Accommodation options also change from time to time.
